    Regarding mystery games, I found the Phoenix Wright video game series works for me- it's got the constraints you mentioned of only being able to do the things that the programmers intended, but those constraints make sense when you're in a courtroom following the rules of court, and what you do to advance the plot is more along the lines of solving pieces of the mystery than, say making a fake mustache out of cat fur. And I find it pretty funny.
